The University of Alabama

Tuscaloosa Psychiatry Residency

Homepage

Welcome to Psychiatry at The University of Alabama! We are proud to announce the establishment of our new residency program, which will serve Tuscaloosa and the communities of West Alabama.

We are uniquely situated within the state’s flagship university and affiliated with the region’s largest medical center. Our program will provide residents an opportunity to work in a variety of settings in and around Tuscaloosa and receive supervision from experienced faculty dedicated to teaching and providing excellent patient care.

Residents will get valuable experience in rural psychiatry with the award winning and innovative community program, Project Horseshoe Farm, as well as other unique settings, such as providing therapy and care in student health to some of the 40,000 students on UA’s campus. Our residents will work across various programs to understand the full continuum of psychiatric care, from acute inpatient treatment to long-term outpatient care. They will see a diverse array of patients in a wide variety of settings, from jail to home visits to nursing homes to the comfort of their offices at University Medical Center. Residents will have protected time each week for a full range of didactics and will discuss the latest research in the field.

When people think of The University of Alabama, most think of championship football teams and a beautiful campus, but the area is also a center for psychiatry. The state’s oldest psychiatric hospital (Bryce Hospital) is located on campus, as is the state’s hospital for older adults (Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatry Center). The state’s forensic psychiatric hospital (Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility) is just off campus, along with the state’s largest VA Hospital inpatient psychiatric unit.

In addition to football, the University has many other national caliber sports and a very active theater and dance program with a brand-new state of the art theater to open soon. The Tuscaloosa community is thriving with its own arts scene as well as many great restaurants, coffee shops and breweries/wine bars along with a beautiful river walk and amphitheater.

I think you will find our training program to be the right place to develop into an excellent psychiatrist. The college-town community feel, and combined top-notch training and opportunities will make for an enjoyable and rewarding start to your career. You will be well prepared to take on any position, provide the most advanced care and will be primed for lifelong learning as caring psychiatrists in your communities.

All the best,
