
John E. Burkhardt II, PsyD, NRHSP

Dr. John E. Burkhardt II is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the College of Community Health Sciences. A licensed clinical psychologist, Burkhardt provides psychotherapy and neuropsychological assessments at University Medical Center clinics in Tuscaloosa and Northport. UMC is operated by CCHS. He also serves as the assistant director of The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program, with a focus on behavioral medicine and resident well-being.
Burkhardt earned his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Schaumburg, Ill. He subsequently completed his residency at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill. After residency he completed two consecutive fellowships with a focus in medical and health psychology – one at VR Behavioral Health Services in Oakland Park, Ill., and another at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill. His extensive clinical experience includes private practice and serving as a clinical health psychologist in various hospitals settings and long-term care facilities in Illinois and Tennessee. He also maintains hospital privileges at the College’s participating training site – DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.
Active professional memberships include the Society of Teacher in Family Medicine, American Psychological Association, Neuroscience Education Institute and the National Register for Health Service Psychologists.
Burkhardt’s clinical and academic interests include behavioral medicine, mood disorders, resident well-being with an emphasis on improving resident life, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral and psychoanalytic psychotherapies, and mentoring and teaching residents. He is committed to integrating behavioral health into primary care, enhancing residency education, and advancing psychotherapy practice all to improve patient outcomes.
