The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Psychiatry Residency Program prepares physicians to provide excellent care in psychiatry. Our ACGME-accredited program provides graduate medical education necessary for board certification in and the professional practice of psychiatry, and prepares physicians to be leaders in their communities.
Pre-Application Checklist
- If you graduated from medical school in the United States or Canada, you must be a graduate of an LCME-accredited or AOA-accredited medical school.
- If you graduated outside the United States or Canada, you must hold a currently valid certificate from the ECFMG prior to appointment or hold a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States.
- You must complete USMLE Steps I and II with a passing score.
- Transcript
- Three letters of recommendation. The three letters should comment on the applicant’s medical knowledge, clinical judgement and character.

Application Process
Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS); we cannot review your application until all required materials are submitted.
Review of applications begins when ERAS goes live. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application through ERAS by December 15.
Wait for a request from us for an interview; all invitations to interview will be extended through Thalamus.

Applicants must apply through ERAS; our residency is listed as University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa Psychiatry program on ERAS. We only accept the Common Application Form designed by the Association of American Medical Colleges. It is not required at the time of application, but international medical graduates must obtain ECFMG certification. Applications will not be considered if they are faxed or emailed.
Applications will be received and reviewed by our Recruiting Committee, and those chosen for interviews will be contacted through Thalamus. Please note that meeting the minimum requirements of the program does not guarantee an interview.

Sponsoring Institution
The College of Community Health Sciences is the Sponsoring Institution for the ACGME accredited University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Psychiatry Residency Program. The College meets ACGME requirements by providing access to a residency contract, handbook, benefits, and sponsoring institution policies. The policies apply to all College of Community Health Sciences graduate medical education training programs. These items are all subject to change.

Visa Requirements
